Acquiring work is a deeply personal and rewarding experience. Inquiring directly with artists allows for intimate connections to be made between the collector, the artists, and the ability to have a dialogue surrounding the works contemporary and historical context.
How do you go about pricing work?
This varies widely between artists. Sometimes it seems to be an elusive topic that is not concrete which leads to underlying value judgements that can cause discrepancies between the artists and collectors expectations. To avoid this I follow a formulaic structure that allows for a clear understanding of the monetary value of each piece.
The Linear Inch Pricing Model
By pricing work by a liner inch pricing model you can clearly see how I arrive at the pricing of my art (or the pricing of future works). The great thing about this is the mutability that occurs across scale, material, and emotional attachment in each piece. How it works is simple; you add together the dimensions of the piece (l+w) if two-dimensional and (l+w+h) if sculptural. I then multiply this by my artist rate which is based on various factors (accolades, previous acquisitions, exhibition catalogue, publications, etc.) this results in the price of a work.
My current artist rate is $24 per linear inch.
(Length + Width + [height]) * (Artist Rate) = Price For Acquisition
Height for sculptural work only
Note: An additional 5.50% ME sales tax will be collected
EXAMPLE
You inquire about a potential commission or to acquire a work with the dimensions of 8 inches by 10 inches. Here is how the pricing is broken down:
(8in + 10in) * ($24) = Pre-Tax Total (PTT)
18in * $24 = PTT
PTT = $432
You can then calculate the cost of sales taxes by taking the pre-tax total and * by 1.055 (Maine’s 5.5% sales tax)
$432 * 1.055 = Total cost w/ tax
Total w/ tax = $455.76
For good faith I round down the number to the whole number to make it easiest for payment.
The total cost w/ tax for an 8in by 10in piece for acquisition would factor out to be; $455
When is payment due?
&
How to pay?
For works that are completed and sought for acquisition, payments must be received before work is shipped.
For work that is inquired for commission at least 1/2 of the payment must be paid upfront with the remainder to be paid upon completion. Work will be shipped once paid in full.
Paying for work can be a stress because of the price-point and to alleviate this payment plans can be drafted and signed by both parties to help bring the pricing to a manageable point. Art should be owned by EVERYONE and this can help bridge that gap of feeling unable to own original art because of costs. I am more than happy to help reach a payment plan that works for everyone.
Once we agree on payment plans or on full-payments, I will supply you with an invoice and payments can then be made through: Venmo, Zelle, Money-Orders, Checks, Cash, PayPal, or any other agreed upon monetary/bartered exchanges.
These are general payment structures I follow though I am open to discussing any other formats that may work better for you as a patron of the arts. Please do not hesitate to reach out!
